What are dental fillings?
A filling is a basic dental restoration used to restore the health and structure of a tooth that has experienced decay or another type of damage. To place a filling, our dentist first removes the damaged portion of the tooth and thoroughly sanitizes the tooth. We then fill the tooth with the filling material and shape it to match the contours of the tooth and to fit your bite. Finally, the filling is hardened for a lasting restoration.
What types of dental fillings are available?
There are two main types of dental fillings available. Amalgam fillings, also called silver fillings, are made of a mixture of metals. These restorations are very durable, are silver in color, and are typically more affordable than composite fillings. Composite dental fillings are made of a material called composite resin. Because we can match the shade of composite resin to your natural tooth color, composite fillings are also called tooth-colored or white fillings. These restorations are an aesthetic choice and generally require less tooth structure removal than amalgam fillings. Dr. Alberto A. Herrero will help you determine which type of restoration is best suited to your individual needs and preferences.
