Periodontal (Gum) Disease Therapy

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a degenerative condition that can greatly affect your oral and overall health if not properly treated. This condition is caused bacteria found in plaque; as plaque and tartar accumulate on the teeth, the bacteria irritate and inflame the gum tissues. The early stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, is characterized by gums that are swollen, tender, red, and bleed easily. When not properly treated, gingivitis may progress into periodontitis, which is the advanced stage of gum disease. In this phase, the gum tissues recede from the teeth and create “pockets” between the teeth and gums where bacteria can thrive. Periodontitis may also result in bone loss and eventually tooth loss.

What is gum disease treatment?

Gum disease treatment varies based on the severity of the condition and your personal dental needs. Based on your individual case, Dr. Alberto A. Herrero may recommend improved at-home dental care, antibiotic treatment, or deep cleanings called scaling and root planing. Our goal is to eliminate bacteria, halt the progress of the disease, and encourage the growth of healthy gum tissues. If needed, we may refer you to a periodontist, or a dentist who specializes in periodontal therapy.
