Oral Cancer Screening: Recognizing Symptoms Through Thorough Examination

In addition to oral cancer screening, we educate our patients on the signs and symptoms of this disease. We tell them that oral cancer affects every area of the mouth, including: the lips, tongue, floor, cheeks, throat, sinuses, and hard and soft palates. While some cancers go unnoticed, we tell our patients that oral cancer has many signs. We encourage you not to ignore any of these telltale symptoms of oral cancer:

A persistent sore throat or feeling that something is caught at the back of the throat.
Unexplained bleeding in the mouth.
A persistent or lasting sore on the face, neck, or mouth that bleeds easily and does not heal within two weeks.
Unexplained loss of feeling, pain, or numbness in the face, neck, or mouth.
Ear pain.
Lumps, bumps, or rough spots on the gums, lips, or other parts of the mouth.
Red, white, or speckled red and white patches in the mouth.
Difficulty chewing, speaking, or swallowing.
A change in the way your teeth or dentures fit together.

What to Expect During Your Screening Test for Oral Cancer at AH Dentistry

Your oral cancer screening typically begins with us conducting a patient history and risk assessment. We'll ask you about your tobacco and alcohol use, family history of cancer, and any symptoms you might be experiencing. From there, we move on to your oral examination. During this process, we check your mouth and neck for all the signs and symptoms of oral cancer.

If we detect anything concerning, we refer you to a specialist. Depending on your condition, we'll recommend an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or an ear, nose, and throat doctor (otolaryngologist). The specialists in our network will make a diagnosis and discuss treatment options and what you can expect. While oral cancer is a serious matter, we know that it's always best to catch and treat it early.
