We continue to do our best to preserve the smiles of our patients from Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Ypsilanti, MI. Tooth Extraction: Discover the Reasons Why Teeth Must be Removed
Sometimes, even experienced dentists like us can't save a tooth. In most cases, the damage is so bad that none of our dental services will be effective. In these unfortunate cases, our founder, Dr. Alberto A. Herrero, informs patients that a tooth extraction is the only solution. Here are five examples of times when our dentists know they can't save your tooth:
- Severe Tooth Decay: If the decay in your tooth makes it impossible to restore with fillings or crowns, we recommend extraction. This is the best way we can help prevent additional infection and pain.
- Advanced Periodontal Disease: If you have severe gum disease, we recommend a tooth extraction. It helps us treat your infection and prevent bone loss.
- Impacted Teeth: We've handled many cases where wisdom teeth don't have enough space to erupt correctly. We recommend pulling the tooth before it causes more pain, infection, and damage to your other teeth.
- Orthodontic Treatment: We recommend tooth extraction to create space for proper tooth alignment of your remaining teeth. We typically do this for people getting braces.
- Fractured & Broken Teeth: If the damage is too significant for us to fix, we recommend a tooth extraction. Extraction is the only option for our patients with damage that extends below the gum line.
At AH Dentistry, we remind our patients that a tooth extraction isn't the end of the world. We understand the sense of loss that can come with losing a tooth. Our team also knows it's easy to blame yourself for not doing more to prevent the situation. We'll consult with you during this time to help you understand that the tooth extraction we're performing will benefit your overall health. Tooth Extraction: Ensuring Comfortable Removal of Unhealthy Teeth
Some patients get anxious after we tell them they need a tooth extraction. In our experience, fear of pain is usually their biggest concern. We're sure they've heard the term "pulling teeth," which some people use to describe long, complex, and painful situations. Other patients tell us stories from people who've had bad experiences with tooth extraction. We assure patients that we perform this procedure safely and effectively using these six steps:
- Anesthesia: Our dentists numb your tooth, gums, and surrounding bone to eliminate tooth extraction pain. If you require a more complex extraction, we will sedate you or use general anesthesia.
- Loosening the Tooth: We use specialized dental instruments called elevators to make it easier to remove your tooth gently.
- Extraction: Once we loosen your tooth, our dentists use forceps to extract it from the socket. If your tooth is impacted or has curled roots, section it into smaller pieces before removing it.
- Cleaning & Socket Preparation: After we remove your tooth, we remove debris and tooth fragments from your socket. In severe cases, we might smooth your bone edges or do bone grafting to prepare your socket for dental implants.
- Post-Extraction Care: We place gauze over the extraction site. We'll ask you to bite down on the gauze to help control bleeding.
- Tooth Extraction Aftercare: In this last step, our staff gives you post-operative instructions about pain management, dietary restrictions, and oral hygiene.
Our dental care should continue after your tooth extraction. Our dentists, Dr. Alberto A. Herrero and Dr. Matthew Benoit, have solutions to replace the tooth they removed. We can replace your missing tooth with a dental bridge, implant, or partial dentures, depending on your unique needs. We encourage you to learn more about our general and family dentistry services.
